Durham first-class

Durham CCC become the 18th first-class county — the first new addition since 1921. Ian Botham signs on.

1993

Division One champions (Newcastle)

Eleven straight wins to start the season. Promoted as champions, St James' Park reborn.

1995

Riverside opens

Middlesbrough leave Ayresome for the Riverside — the first purpose-built Premier League stadium.

1996

Twelve points clear (Newcastle)

Beardsley, Ferdinand, Ginola, Asprilla. 4-3 at Anfield. The title slips away.

1996

Shearer comes home (Newcastle)

World-record £15m signing from Blackburn. 'I could've gone anywhere — I came home.'

1997

Boro's treble heartbreak

Juninho, Ravanelli, Emerson. Relegated on a docked-points technicality, and beaten in both cup finals.

1999

Reid's Sunderland record

Peter Reid's Sunderland win the First Division with 105 points — a divisional record — after opening the Stadium of Light in 1997.
