Comes Home

‘I could have gone anywhere — I chose the Toon’
By our Chief Football Writer · St James’ Park

AAN SHEARER last night ended weeks of fevered speculation on Tyneside by putting pen to paper on a world-record £15 million transfer from Blackburn Rovers to Newcastle United.

The Gosforth-born striker, 25, chose his boyhood club ahead of Manchester United, telling reporters at a packed St James’ Park: ‘I could have gone anywhere. I chose to come home.’

Manager Kevin Keegan hailed the deal as ‘the signing of the century’ and promised the Geordie faithful a title challenge to remember.
