Stokoe's Sunderland

Second Division Sunderland stun Don Revie's Leeds 1-0 at Wembley. Porterfield scores, Montgomery's double save enters folklore.

1974

Charlton lifts Boro

Jack Charlton's Middlesbrough win the Second Division by 15 points — one of the great promotion seasons.

Wembley heartbreak (Newcastle)

Newcastle reach the FA Cup final but Liverpool win 3-0.

1976

League Cup final (Newcastle)

Beaten 2-1 by Manchester City. Macdonald leaves the next summer.

1977

Durham on the map

Durham CCC granted first-class status is still years away, but the county side dominate Minor Counties cricket through the decade.
