1961

Newcastle drop

Newcastle relegated to the Second Division after a decade among the elite.

1964

Roker return (Sunderland)

Sunderland promoted back to Division One under Alan Brown. Roker Park roars again.

1965

Champions of Division Two (Newcastle)

Joe Harvey's side seal promotion as champions. The rebuild is on.

1966

World Cup on Teesside & Wearside

Ayresome Park and Roker Park host World Cup group games — including North Korea's shock 1-0 win over Italy at Ayresome.

1967

Boro promoted

Middlesbrough go up from the Third Division, Stan Anderson's side setting the platform for the 1970s.

1969

Fairs Cup glory (Newcastle)

Moncur's two goals at St James' and a 3-2 aggregate win over Újpest. Newcastle's only major European trophy.
