Story of the seasons

Six years, one knighthood

  1. 1999/00 · 11th, Premier League

    The local hero returns

Robson takes over in September with Newcastle bottom of the league. His first home game: an 8-0 demolition of Sheffield Wednesday, Shearer five. Survival, stability, and a club exhaling for the first time in years.

    Programmes from 1999/00
  2. 2000/01 · 11th, Premier League

    Rebuilding the foundations

A season of consolidation. Speed, Dyer and Solano set the tempo. Quiet groundwork for what's coming — a young Newcastle side starting to believe again.

    Programmes from 2000/01
  3. 2001/02 · 4th, Premier League

    Back into Europe

Bellamy and Robert arrive. Shearer reborn. Beating Arsenal at Highbury on a December night with Bellamy's late winner — Robson's Newcastle are genuine top-four contenders again.

    Programmes from 2001/02
  4. 2002/03 · 3rd, Premier League

    Champions League nights

Lost the first three group games — then beat Juventus, Feyenoord and Dynamo Kyiv to qualify for the second group stage. St James' Park under European lights. Bellamy's winner in Rotterdam, one of the great nights.

    Programmes from 2002/03
  5. 2003/04 · 5th, Premier League

    Europe again, sterner test

Shearer past 250 club goals. UEFA Cup semi-final run, beaten by Marseille. A team still capable of brilliant nights but the edge beginning to soften.

    Programmes from 2003/04
  6. 2004/05 · Sacked, August 2004

    A sudden, undeserved ending

Sacked four games into the new season after winning none. A decision that aged badly within weeks. Sir Bobby left as the most loved manager of the modern era — knighted, adored, irreplaceable.
