  1. 1991/92 · 20th, Division Two

    Saved from the drop

    Keegan walks back into a club staring at the third tier. A 1-0 win over Portsmouth on the final day keeps Newcastle in the second division and lights the fuse.

    Champions of Division One

    Eleven straight wins to open the season. Cole arrives in March, Sellars and Lee tear up the right, and the title is sealed at Grimsby. St James' Park is reborn.

    Back with a bang

    Cole scores 41 in all competitions. Top-flight football returns with thumping wins over Liverpool (3-0) and a 7-1 dismantling of Swindon. Europe is back.

    The Entertainers take shape

    Cole sold to Manchester United in a January bombshell. Beardsley reborn, Ginola and Ferdinand arrive in the summer. The blueprint for the title push is drawn.

    World record £15m signs for his boyhood club. 5-0 over Manchester United in October. Keegan resigns in January with the team still in the title race. An era ends.
